In 2012, I had the unique opportunity to traval afar from my studio and execute a stained glass commission in Winnipeg, Canada. I had accepted the task of producing the design of another glass artisan, and producing his style would be a completely new experience for me in many ways. The resulting stained glass can be see in the photos above and below.

mcnally robinson paririe ink cafeThe captivating style of this stained glass is achieved by using all mouth-blown glass and carefully placing the patterns on the sheets of glass so as to determine precisely the blend of colors (or lightness and darkness) in each sheet of glass. (These photos do not do the artwork justice; many more nuances are seen in the actual glasses.)

The architect, interior designer, and stained glass artist who designed this commission is named Koval. He designed and produced this commission, engaging me to craft the actual windows and get them installed safely. It took about 30 days. They were installed in the Prairie Ink Cafe portion of the McNally-Robinson Bookstore in Winnipeg. (Great bookstore - great cafe - GREAT food!)

I learned a lot about this style of doing stained glass that I had not experienced previously. I had to invent a few new techniques, too, such as figuring out how to taper lead came from a thicker width to a thinner one.

And the experience of working in a strange city and in someone else's studio was an adventure that I would not have missed!
