This piece of
automobile art is a
freehanging, copper foiled, stained glass Porsche 911. It is framed in
black
lacquered wood. The lettering, windshield
wipers, and hood details are
all sandblasted into flash glasses of various
colors. Flash Glass is a
sheet
of glass, often clear glass, with a thinner layer of colored
glass fused to one surface; by sandblasting
through the thin colored layer, the clear layer is revealed, but also
frosted in appearance. This is a good method for making permanent
stained glass lettering.
Notice
the extremely odd shapes of
the pieces of glass, such as the background pieces. Just the upper
left-hand
background piece required almost an hour to cut and grind. The
incorporation of very odd shaped pieces is part of the design style
that I have developed that makes my work stand out from that of other
craftspeople in this medium. In achieving the skills necessary to do
this, I have been able to design out most of the extraneous lines that
you will see in other people's work. The craftsmanship of this
automotive artwork is flawless! As with all of my pieces, I settle for
nothing less!
Automotive art doesn't get much
better than this! Imagine immortalizing your own favorite automobile in
stained glass.
Update: Glass can now be cut with diamond-bladed saws. Even jets of
water can cut multiple layers of glass at one time without breaking it.
I'm glad people still appreciate that I make my stained glass without
glass saws or high-speed jets, doing 98% of it with just hand tools. |
